Surgical Technologist Delivery Room Full Time Nights

At UT Southwestern Medical Center, our obstetricians, certified nurse midwives, labor and delivery nurses, and maternity nurses provide the best possible birth experience for women and families. UTSW is a Level IV comprehensive care maternal facility and a Level III Neonatal facility. With advanced training and years of experience, we provide compassionate care for mothers, babies, and their families throughout labor and delivery. 2000+ deliveries per year, 16 LDRS/3 ORs, 5 prep & recovery rooms. Job Summary A surgical technician working in labor and delivery will be responsible for providing assistance to an obstetrician during delivery.

Experience and Education

• High School diploma and one of the following: 
• Successful completion of an accredited education program for surgical technologist and holds and maintains certification as a surgical technologist by: 
• the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or its successor; 
• the National Center for Competency Testing or its successor; or 
• another surgical technologist certification program approved by the department 
• OR has completed an appropriate training program for surgical technology in the army, navy, air force, marine corps, or coast guard of the United States or in the United States Public Health Service; 
• OR was employed to practice surgical technology in a health care facility before September 1, 2009. 
• Current certification preferred. 
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) required.
• Call may be required 

Job Duties

• Assist the RN circulator with preparing the operating room for the arrival of the patient. Maintain ongoing communication with RN circulator regarding the surgical procedure and patient status. 
• Select, inspect, and open surgical supplies and equipment in a timely manner according to the physician’s preference list. 
• Properly perform a surgical hand scrub and gown self and others. 
• Create and maintain a sterile field with the essential surgical supplies and equipment needed for the surgical procedure in a timely, functional, and organized manner. Maintain high standards of aseptic technique during surgical procedure. Takes corrective action for breaks in aseptic technique. 
• Ensure patient safety by checking all equipment for proper working order prior to the surgical procedure. 
• Perform sponge, sharps, and formal/inventory instrument counts with the RN circulator at proper count intervals. 
• Properly pass surgical instruments and anticipate surgeon’s needs during the surgical procedure. 
• Clean and prepare surgical instruments for terminal sterilization. Assist with operating room turnover. 
• Organize and prioritize preoperative tasks based on identified need. Demonstrate competency to operate surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment. Demonstrates proficiency and independence. 
• Serve as a technical subject matter person, resource person, and/or preceptor to preoperative nursing staff rotating through specialty service. Complete written clinical performance evaluation form in a timely manner. 
• Safely handle and operate surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment and perform safe preoperative care in a manner that is cost effective without compromising quality of care. 
• Problem-solve minor issues of counts/errors, patient care, relationships, equipment, supplies, and the environment prior to management intervention. Actively provide and support efforts to develop and maintain a team environment.
